It seems obvious to me after viewing that the Rocket Sled must have been produced to test new materials at speed, but what wasn’t obvious were the methods and means used to physically achieve the braking and acceleration requirements as well as recording the telemetry.
These days tests like this are still conducted an example being the work JPL is doing on Low-Density Supersonic Decelerators.
